Why You Should Attend:
The Joint Training Seminar for
Kansas
providers and surveyors was created originally as the result of the cooperative efforts of long-term care providers and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment – Bureau of Health Facilities. Each Joint Training Seminar features a deficiency area(s) with the goal of educating providers and surveyors on quality standards of practice and regulatory compliance. It is hoped that bringing together long-term care professionals and surveyors will foster dialogue in a neutral setting where interaction, discussion, and learning can occur in a non-adversarial environment. The Kansas Adult Care Executives (KACE) Association has worked closely with LeadingAge Kansas, the Kansas Health Care Association, and the Kansas Department on Aging and Disability Services to present this Joint Training Seminar. KACE is pleased to offer these two one-day sessions to discuss the topic of dementia care and appropriate use of antipsychotic medications.
Overview of Training Content:
Few topics in long-term care have received as much attention as the topic of dementia care, and the spotlight is now trained on antipsychotic medications. Medications continue to comprise an integral part of the care provided to residents of adult care homes. It is the responsibility of the facility, in collaboration with the physician and the consultant pharmacist, to evaluate and manage medication regimens. Medication management is based in the care process which includes recognition or identification of a problem/need, assessment, diagnosis/cause determination, management/treatment, monitoring, and revision interventions as needed. While all medications administered to residents of adult care homes should meet the medication management objectives, certain medications have been recognized to have significant risk when used in the elderly. Antipsychotic drugs are particularly scrutinized, as their benefit to risk for certain residents is difficult to determine. The drugs’ black-box warnings make their use a legal, ethical, and regulatory challenge.
In this timely, day-long learning opportunity, Dr. Susan Wehry will present the latest thinking on person-centered dementia care; the evidence for and against the use of medications and the alignment of care with CMS guidelines. Dr. Wehry will offer practical strategies on how best to address the needs of persons with dementia to help ensure quality of life and quality of care. She will describe steps adult care homes can take to transform their cultures of care. Dr. Wehry will emphasize why every member of the long-term care team is crucial in the process if this effort is to succeed. Keeping the resident at the forefront of all decisions will keep the process on the right track.
Continuing Education Credit:
Administrators – Approval is pending for six continuing education clock hours for adult care home administrators.
Nurses – CNEs will be available for nurses.
Attendance Certificates will be available for all other attendees.
Joint Training Seminar Objectives:
At the conclusion of the seminar, participants should be able to:
- Describe person-centered dementia care
- Emphasize the resident as the focal point of the care planning process and medication management
- Discuss challenging behaviors as expressions of unmet need
- Apply an array of non-pharmacologic interventions in dementia care
- Explain the rationale for increased scrutiny of antipsychotic drug use in elderly dementia residents
- Implement strategies to ensure appropriate use of antipsychotic medications
- Review the components of the new CMS Guidance on antipsychotic medication use (F-TAG 329)
JOINT PROVIDER SEMINAR SPEAKER
DR. SUSAN WEHRY, M.D. is a geriatric psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience in late life mental health. Since 2011, she has served as Commissioner of Vermont’s Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living.
In 2002 and 2007, she assisted CMS in the development of webcasts on mental health needs and individualized care planning in nursing homes. She has been an active partner in CMS’ current Initiative to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes. In the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Dr. Wehry participated in a successful workforce development and quality initiative to help stabilize nursing homes hardest hit by the storms.
A popular and nationally recognized speaker and advocate, Dr. Wehry has educated policymakers, caregivers, administrators, physicians, and other health and human service professionals from Alaska to Florida. In 2010 she authored a curriculum known as OASIS designed to transform care of individuals with challenging behaviors. The curriculum is now in use in over 100 homes in Massachusetts to support their efforts to improve dementia care. A similar initiative has been launched in Vermont.
Susan sums up her career like this: Whether I am at the bedside or the statehouse, in the boardroom or the classroom, I have one simple aim in mind: to advocate for the highest quality of life and care for the people we serve.
