Has your community embraced the new Dining Standards yet? They have been out since August 2011 and now CMS has endorsed them. Beyond that, they are the right thing to do and can significantly enhance the quality of life and health of the individuals you serve. Overwhelming research has proven that so called “therapeutic diets” are anything but therapeutic for older individuals. Restrictive diets have been proven to cause weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration and depression. AND, with weight loss being the most commonly cited actual harm deficiency in the state of Kansas, this is information you NEED to hear!
Objectives:
- Explain the negative outcomes often caused by restrictive diets for older individuals.
- Identify resources to facilitate physician buy-in to liberalized diets.
- List steps needed to create a successful transition in implementation of the New Dining Practice Standards.
- Describe ways to present pureed foods in a tasteful, dignified way.
