EDUCATIONAL PRE-SESSIONS
1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Total 4.5 CEUs – Resident Care)
DR. JAMES RIDER, D.O., C.M.D.; Valley Falls, KS, will speak on the topic of Depression – A Recurring Concern for Residents in Long-Term Care Facilities. In the midst of the antipsychotic scare what do we do with Depression? Is Depression in the elderly serious enough to treat? Or should we just ignore it as a by-product of aging. Why is Depression in the MDS and how does it relate to F-Tag 329? Should we, as staff, view Depression as a “Quality-of-Life” issue and attempt to manage its symptoms to give the resident a more satisfying daily life? Let’s find some answers to these questions together!
3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
DR. KEVIN BRYANT, M.D., C.M.D.; Wichita, KS, will present on the topic of Update on Clinical Geriatric Issues 2014 – with a Focus on Kansas Long-Term Care Facilities. Dr. Bryant will review the latest Geriatric literature specifically related to falls, urinary incontinence, obesity, and weight loss. He will discuss:
• Should pleasantly plump elderly residents lose weight?
• What about skipping breakfast as a weight loss strategy?
• Are cranberry tablets helpful for UTI’s?
Dr. Bryant will apply the current research on these topics to what he has experienced in his role as a Medical Director in Kansas long-term care facilities.
