OBJECTIVES

Presentation: Who Will Take Care of Me When I’m Old: Mental Illness in Adult Care Facilities 
Presenter: Maritza Buenaver, MD Geriatric Psychiatry 
1. Differentiate between Major and subsyndromal depression and recognize the risks for developing late life depression. 
2. List signs and symptoms of depression in the elderly 
3. Describe Factors to consider in assessment of depression, including further assessment of suicidality. 
4. Differentiate between Grief and Bereavement with Depression 
5. Discuss interventions that promote mental health for residents with depression 
6. Compare and contrast causes of late onset psychosis 
7. Compare and contrast the most common type of psychosis and delusions in Dementias 8. Learn about how to approach a person with PTSD , and their common presentation in the nursing home facility 
9. Identify and recognize the types of Delirium 
10. Identify Predisposing and Precipitating factors of Delirium 
11. Describe methods of prevention and management of Delirium 
12. To learn about prototypical presentation of depression, delirium and dementia 

Presentation: What is wrong with Grandma: Understanding Dementia 
Presenters: Courtney Huhn, MD Geriatrician and Medical Director Maritza Buenaver, MD Geriatric psychiatry 
1. Recognize differences among basic types of Dementia 
2. Explain what the Cognitive Impairment warning Signs are and why they are important. 
3. Differentiate between Neuropsychiatric Symptoms of Dementia and Behaviors 
4. Identify strategies for communicating with persons with dementia: Positive Physical Approach Hand under hand 

Presentation: KDADS Training on Self Reporting 
Presentor: Patty Brown, RN MS 
1. Define Abuse, neglect, and exploitation according to state statutes and CMS regulations 2. Differentiate between reportable and non-reportable incidents 
3. Describe the process for reporting ANE according to state and CMS regulations 
4. Discuss the elements of a thorough investigation and completion of facility investigation reports 

CONTINUING EDUCATION: 

This training is approved for 6.5 continuing education clock hours for adult care home administrators and registered operators by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (LTS#A1427 in the area of Resident Care.

SPEAKERS: 

Courtney A. Huhn, MD is the Medical Director of the Community Living Centers (long-term and skilled nursing care facilities) of the Topeka Campus at VA Eastern Kansas and a Clinical Assistant Professor for the University of Kansas Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Huhn is board certified in Family Medicine and Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Huhn is a Certified Medical Director through the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. Dr. Huhn completed her training including medical school, family medicine residency and geriatric fellowship all at the University of Kansas (KU) School of Medicine. She enjoys educating interdisciplinary team, geriatric fellows, resident physicians and medical students. 

Maritza Buenaver, MD. is a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with sub specialization in Geriatric Psychiatry and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Director of Geriatric Psychiatry care and provider of the Behavioral Health Community Living Center at the VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare System. Dr. Buenaver completed her training including medical school and Psychiatric residency at the University of Kansas (KU) School of Medicine and her fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, where she was also trained in Hospice and Palliative Medicine . Dr. Buenaver provides care to patients in the inpatient, outpatient and long term care settings. Specialized in assessment and treatment of mental health disorders and dementia care. Dr. Buenaver is an Associate, clinical professor, in the department of Psychiatry at the University of Kansas school of medicine and Volunteer professor at Washburn University, department of nursing. She has focused her career in educating paid and unpaid caregivers of persons with dementia. 

Melissa Mille graduated with her RN from Neosho County Community College, with her BSN from MidAmerica Nazarene University and is currently enrolled in the MSN program at MidAmerica Nazarene University. Melissa worked as a CNA, CMA, LPN and RN in long term care prior to her employment with the state. Melissa has worked for the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services for over 10 years in multiple roles including as a Health Facility Surveyor, Quality Improvement Coordinator, Staff Development and Quality Improvement Director, and currently serves as the Director of Survey and Certification. 

Patty Brown has been the Regional Manager for State Licensed Facilities in the Survey, Certification and Credentialing Commission at KDADS since 2008. Prior to that Patty was the Education Specialist at the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Patty spent time as the Education Coordinator at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and started out at Stormont Vail Regional Medical Center as a nurse in the pediatric ward.
